Privacy Notice

Version 2026-08-a · Bermuda Grocery Compare

The short version. We collect what the site needs to work and nothing else. We don't sell your information, we don't use advertising trackers, and receipt photos are read on our own equipment in Bermuda rather than sent to an outside company. You can see, correct or delete anything we hold, at any time.

Who we are

Bermuda Grocery Compare is a price comparison website for grocery shopping in Bermuda. We are run by Bermuda Grocery Compare, of Bermuda (registered address to follow).

You can contact us at [email protected]. Our Privacy Officer is The Privacy Officer, Bermuda Grocery Compare, reachable at the same address.

The site is in beta. Prices may be out of date or wrong, and you should always check at the till.

What we collect, and why

Only what the site needs. Each purpose below is separate — agreeing to one does not agree you to another.

If you just browse and search

WhatWhy
The words you search forTo return results, and to find searches that return nothing so we can fix them
Which results you clickTo tell whether the ranking is any good
A random session number stored in your browserTo join those together within a visit. It is not linked to your name, and we use no advertising cookies

You do not need an account to browse, search, or scan a receipt.

If you create an account

WhatWhy
Your email addressTo sign you in and contact you about your account
Your name, if you give oneTo address you. Optional
Your passwordStored only as a scrambled value we cannot reverse
Your saved shopping listsSo they are there next time

If you scan a receipt

WhatWhy
The photographTo read the items and prices from it
The items, prices, store and date on itTo show you what you paid, and where the same items are cheaper
Basic image measurements (sharpness, brightness, size)To warn you if a photo is unlikely to read, and to improve that warning

We do not read anything else off your receipt. Card numbers, loyalty numbers, cashier names and phone numbers are excluded at the point the receipt is read, so they never reach our records. Please still black out any card or loyalty number before uploading.

Items we deliberately do not keep against you

Some purchases reveal things about your health or your family that a shopping list should not. By default we do not record that you bought them.

This covers pharmacy items (painkillers, indigestion, cold and allergy remedies), pregnancy and fertility products, baby formula and nappies, and alcohol.

We keep the price of those items, because prices are what this site is for. We keep no link between that price and you. If you would rather have a complete personal record, there is a tick box when you upload — it is off unless you turn it on.

How we use it

  1. To show you prices and comparisons.
  2. To save your lists so you can reuse them.
  3. To read your receipts and show what the same shopping would cost elsewhere.
  4. To make the site work better — fixing failed searches, improving receipt reading.
  5. To understand grocery prices in Bermuda generally — but only if you have ticked the box for it, and only ever as combined figures that do not identify anyone.

We do not sell your information and we do not use it for advertising.

Automated processing

We use software to read the text on your receipt and to guess which catalogue product each line refers to.

This runs on our own equipment in Bermuda. Your receipt images are not sent to any outside company to be processed.

Those guesses are checked by a person before they count towards anything shown to you. No decision with a legal or similarly significant effect on you is made automatically.

Who else sees it

WhoWhat they see
CloudflareCarries traffic between your browser and our server, so sees the technical details of that connection such as your IP address. They do not receive your receipts or your lists
Google (Gmail)Any email you send us, because that is where our mailbox is
Nobody elseWe do not share, sell or rent your information, and we do not pass it to the supermarkets

We would only disclose information if the law required it.

Where it is kept

Your account, lists and receipt data are held on equipment in Bermuda. Traffic passes through Cloudflare's international network in transit.

How long we keep it

WhatHow long
Receipt photographs90 days after we have read them, then deleted
Prices and items read from receiptsKept, because they are price data — but with no link to you for the categories above
Your account and saved listsUntil you delete your account
Search records12 months
Consent recordsFor as long as we rely on them, plus a reasonable period after — they are the record of what you agreed to

Your rights

Under Bermuda's Personal Information Protection Act 2016 you can ask us to:

Email [email protected] and we will respond within 14 days.

Withdrawing consent is not retrospective punishment: if you withdraw consent for research use, we remove your existing receipts from those combined figures too, not only future ones.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Privacy Commissioner for Bermuda.

Cookies and similar

Only what the site needs to function:

No advertising cookies, no third-party trackers, no analytics companies.

Children

The site is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect information about anyone under 14. If you believe we have, tell us and we will delete it.

Where our price data comes from

Prices shown for Lindo's, The MarketPlace and Miles Market are collected from each store's own public online catalogue. That is information about products, not about people, and none of it comes from you.

Online prices and shelf prices can differ, and our data may be up to a month old. Always check at the till.

Changes

If we change how we use your information we will update this notice and, where the change is significant, ask you again rather than assume your previous answer still applies.

Version 2026-08-a — the version recorded against any consent you give, so you can always see which wording you agreed to.
